We wanted to take a few minutes to share some important news with you all regarding the status of Terraria: Otherworld.
As you all know, when we first announced the game, the Re-Logic focus has always been and will continue to provide a complete and quality gaming experience for our fan base. This means that we will not compromise on the quality of the game for quick time to market or for any other reason under our control. Our team had a clear vision of this game - something we shared with all of you with a lot of common excitement - and as much as we hate to say it (and despite all the reforms we tried to do in the past year), the current state of the game is - is still equal to the distant parts and is behind the schedule.
As a result, we made the decision to move from Engine Software support to Terraria: Otherworld development. Re-Logic owns the game as it is today, and we are exploring the many options available to us to get the TOW to a place where we can confidently fulfill the vision and expectations we all have for this game. After carefully analyzing everything, we feel that a fresh and fresh start / direction is the only way the Other World will ever reach its full potential at this stage.
The great news is that we already have a dedicated and passionate team ready to take the torch and continue our journey through another world! Based on their truly impressive work done to date with rewriting Terraria on console / mobile, coupled with the amazingly accurate Otherworld rework proposal (after careful game review on their part), we made the decision to Bring Pipeworks On Board as our new partner for the development of Terraria: Otherworld!
We know that the "radio silence" and all the shifting development work aimed at continuing the journey through Terraria: Underworld has disappointed many of you. This is not a joyous or easy challenge for us - but we strongly believe that we have a responsibility to do so for our community and loyal customers to maintain the standards you and we expect and to focus on delivering the best games for you. The length of silence was solely due to the fact that "these things take a while to happen and then be tuned" along with our desire to have a real solution / way forward before just sharing the news about the engine.
Whatever it is, quality just isn't that we're willing to compromise and make money fast. It can be painful in the short term, but we sincerely hope that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. It is clear that if we knew that this was going to be a script, then we would have lingered on the announcement of the game until later, but this is the development of the game. However, we are really happy and confident in the new team and new plan - and we can't wait to get back on track.
Some quick details / questions you may have:
Development: We will be working with Pipeworks to take a top-down view of the entire game to see how it fits with our high expectations and core vision for this project.
Timing: Since we know more about timing specifics, etc. and / or have fresh spoilers that we need to share, we are absolutely confident - although we expect the "quiet period" to continue a little longer as Pipeworks grows.
Impact on other work: Pipeworks will function as expected so that the Otherworld workload does not impact the timing / quality of Terraria 1 Console / Mobile / Switch launch
Other changes: We will be doing a complete update of all other public places in the world (website / Twitter / Facebook, etc.), including a logo update.
